I don’t own a smartphone. I have been avoiding social networks for as long as I can remember. And yet, a couple of weeks ago, I launched my website, and this very afternoon I made an executive decision to start my YouTube channel!
‘‘Who are you?” said the caterpillar.
This was not an encouraging opening for a conversation. Alice replied, rather shyly, “I—I hardly know, Sir, just at present—at least I know who I was when I got up this morning, but I think I must have been changed several times since then.”
“What do you mean by that?” said the caterpillar sternly. “Explain yourself!”
“I can’t explain myself; I’m afraid, sir,” said Alice, “because I am not myself, you see.”
Somehow or other, I came across a comment that I wrote a long time ago under a fellow astrologer’s video. I scrolled down and noticed heaps of unanswered questions by other enthusiasts of the craft. And without knowing ‘how, when, or from where’—as Pablo Neruda wrote in his love poem—I started replying to all the questions that were left in the void. And then a proverbial lightbulb appeared above my head, and I knew that I should create a channel focusing on answering viewers’ questions about modern tarot and evolutionary astrology. And that I better start as soon as possible, before I run out of existential courage to do so!
On a merry note, do you reckon there are many content creators out there without as much as a smart phone in their arsenal? Chuckle!
And that is the reason why I still do not own a smartphone, in spite of writing a blog and having a YouTube channel.
It is very hard to resist distractions of all sorts. And one needs space to think, to contemplate, to read, to write, and to study.
Having said that, perhaps it is less of a big deal for older generations. You have read a lot, guys. Half of your life was without computers and mobile phones.
Uncle V. reported the same non-reading phase of his life. At least in terms of physical books. But then again, he too has read plenty of paperbacks.
It is for our generation and the ones that are younger that gadgets and social networks are a double-edged sword. We can’t live without them because the world has changed, but at the same time, without proper strategies, one will start noticing growing issues with memory, concentration, and anxiety.
